What is hammertoe?
Hammertoe
Hammertoe occurs when one of the smaller toes (most commonly the second toe) bends downward at the middle joint, creating a shape that resembles a hammer. This happens when the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that normally keep the toe straight become imbalanced, causing the toe to stay in a bent position. Hammertoe most often affects the second, third, or fourth toe and can lead to pain, irritation, corns or calluses from rubbing against shoes, and difficulty wearing certain types of footwear. Over time, the toe may become stiff and harder to straighten if the condition progresses.
